The World Café presents an opportunity for discussion on key topics shaping our future.

This is accomplished by gathering groups around tables to discuss a question posed to the group. Each table has a different question. After 10 minutes the group will move to a different table. A host at each table gathers the thoughts, ideas, and recommendations from the table discussion. Once the groups have visited each of the tables, the host from each table will report to the entire group for more discussion.

The recommendations and ideas to even actionable ideas for the future of Health Sciences Libraries have the potential to emerge from the rich discussion.

Appetizers at 5:00 pm, followed by a short presentation from OVID and a delicious buffet dinner. After dinner, enjoy complementary admission to the Harley Davidson Museum. In addition to the permanent Museum exhibits, an outdoor summer bike show, Harley also has motorcycles on stationary rollers outside for guests to take through the gears. Museum staff calls it “a crash course without the crash” for first-time riders. What are you waiting for? WHSLA members were born to be wild!

8:15 am—12:15 pm CE: Third-Party PubMed Tools (4 MLA CEs)

The freely available PubMed API (application programming interface) makes it possible for programmers from outside of the National Library of Medicine (NLM ) to develop alternatives to PubMed.gov for searching NLM’s vast database of biomedical journal literature citations. Some of these search programs include materials from databases beyond PubMed. This four-hour workshop will introduce several popular and free third-party PubMed tools, comparing and contrasting them with the PubMed.gov interface. Through case studies, group exercises and hands-on practice, participants will become familiar with the strengths and limitations of search tools such as PubGet, Quertle, eTBlast, LigerCat, and others. This workshop is intended for intermediate and advanced PubMed searchers. Attendees should bring their own laptop computer, free WIFI will be available. Download form to register

8:15 am—12:15 pm CE Translational Research: Hastening Research Results, Reducing Research Fraud, Protecting Patients and the New Importance of Research Data (4 MLA CEs applied for)

Translational research is a relatively new approach to the clinical sciences which tries to break down disciplinary barriers and bring research "from the bench to the bedside". The emphasis on research data and bibliometrics provides new opportunities for librarians to work more closely with researchers and clinicians alike. Making sure the data and publications are openly available to clinicians at the point of care and to the public at large is a natural progression of the library profession. We will provide an overview of the history, rationale, funding, policies and data management life cycle integral to this rapidly evolving approach to research and health care.
